Fire Onboard Irish Ferries
With the kind permission of the Marine Engineers Review (MER), SWZ Maritime publishes an article on the fire onboard Irish Ferries' vessel Oscar Wilde in February 2010. The fire was caused by incorrect diaphragm material. Below a video of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) responding to the fire and two of the vessel as it sails today.

Steady as She Goes Exhibition at the Maritime Museum
'Steady as She Goes! Sailing by Mercator’s Map' is the new exhibition at the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. Apart from an article by the museum's curator Ron Brand in SWZ Maritime (November edition), below two videos with Jack Wouterse and navigation specialist Wouter Heijveld introducing the exhibition. The first is a short commercial that introduces the exhibition, the second gives more background information and shows that even navigantion specialists can get seasick.

The concept of the Groot Cross-Bow is tested in the HSVA Hamburg towing tank. The vessel's design proved to be very efficient in waves. Slamming is reduced significantly.

8500 MPC with Groot Cross-Bow
As was reported in Maand Maritiem in SWZ Maritime (edition 7/8 2011), Super GreenShip has ordered four Groot Super Green 8500s (8500t multipurpose carriers) with Groot Cross-Bow. Visit to IHC Lagersmit
SWZ Maritime editor Richard Akerboom was invited to pay a visit to IHC Lagersmit, a report of which has been published in the December issue. IHC Lagersmit specialises in sealing solutions and some of the products discussed in the article are the Supreme Ventus Seals. Coast Guard lifeboats were filmed doing rescue manoeuvers at the Checto River Bar entrance during rough seas. Wave heights were close to 11' feet at the river bar entrance. The coast guard also deployed a dummy during the rescue training. You'll see it during the slow motion section of the video.
