Installing the Heaviest Monopile Foundations Ever Used http://www.swzonline.nl/weblog/3_Videos/item/74_Installing_the_Heaviest_Monopile_Foundations_Ever_Used Offshore wind is one of the biggest new markets in maritime industry. On 8 May, the Northern department of the KNVTS organises a lecture on the transport and installation of offshore wind foundations. Speaker at the lecture is Edwin van de Brug, commercial manager Ballast Nedam Offshore. This company uses its vessel, the HLV Svanen, for delivering and installing wind turbine foundations.

Van de Brug will focus on the installation of the monopiles for the offshore windfarm Walnet 2 in England. The heaviest monopole foundations ever used have been installed for this project (the poles are 6.5 m in diameter, 70 m long and weigh up to 850 t a piece).

Largest Bulk Carrier Ever to Visit the Port of Rotterdam http://www.swzonline.nl/weblog/3_Videos/item/65_Largest_Bulk_Carrier_Ever_to_Visit_the_Port_of_Rotterdam Recently, the Port of Rotterdam welcomed the Vale Rio de Janeiro, the largest bulk carrier ever to visit Rotterdam. The vessel transports iron ore and has a load capacity of 400,000 t and a maximum depth of 23 m. The ship was commissioned last year. Brazilian iron ore multinational Vale plans to build nineteen of these vessels, setting a new standard for iron ore transport by sea.

The Vale Rio takes the place of the Berge Stahl, which used to be the largest dry bulk carrier of the port of Rotterdam with a load capacity of 365,000 t. This vessel has been sailing from Ponta de Madeira to Rotterdam for 25 years, but is currently at the dock for repairs after which it will sail between the Netherlands and Brazil for another five years.

Reconstruction of the Course of the Costa Concordia http://www.swzonline.nl/weblog/3_Videos/item/64_Reconstruction_of_the_Course_of_the_Costa_Concordia After the Costa Concordia made the headlines by running onto a rock off the island of Giglio in Italy, QPS made the following reconstruction based on the AIS data. The company used its Qastor Pilotage software to replay the final minutes of the Costa Concordia and show the sort of warnings that are available to the mariner in today's software.

The Costa Concordia apparently had a habit of sailing close to the island of Giglio. On the 14th of August 2011, the Costa Concordia made a similar, but near-miss, passage as the one in January that resulted in the ship's grounding. The first close encounter took place near the same rock formation the ship hit in January (Punta di Castellari 238 m distance/13.8 kn), the second one at Punta di Lazaretto (with only 156 m distance/11.6 kn). QPS also made a reconstruction of this passage, which you can watch below.

P-Trap Videos http://www.swzonline.nl/weblog/3_Videos/item/53_P_Trap_Videos SWZ Maritime had the scoop on a new invention to protect ships from pirates: the P-Trap. Since then, the product has been further tested and developed to the extent that it is now commercially available to the shipping industry. The P-Trap will be launched at Europort.

Westmark BV, based in the Netherlands, created the P-Trap as a passive non-lethal ship protection measure. Once deployed, it protects seagoing vessels from boarding attempts by pirates. The reusable system carries thin lines which float at the waterline around the sides and at the stern of a vessel. Pirates that enter the P-Trap safety zone will run into the lines, which are designed to become entangled in their engines, disabling their vessel. The P-Trap is designed to defend against multiple simultaneous attacks and does not require crew involvement once deployed.

Since last year, Westmark has created three prototype systems, designed to fit most seagoing ships. The effectiveness of the system was proven during trials with the Dutch Coastguard, Navy & Rescue Service. Watch a video of the prototype testing below or visit the photo album SWZ posted earlier.

Below you can watch some more videos of the P-Trap.
