Damen to Build LNG-hybrid RoRo Ferries at Mangalia

Seaspan will add two 149-metre RoRo ferries with LNG and battery powered propulsion to its fleet. The vessels will be built at Damen Shipyards Mangalia in Romania.

The vessels with 1034 lane metres will have 209 cubic metres of LNG storage on board as well as 2 megawatt hours of battery capacity.

Emissions Reductions and Fleet Expansion

Seaspan Ferries currently operates a fleet of seven ferries out of four terminals in British Columbia, Canada, and services trucking companies that supply all types of cargo to Vancouver Island. The order for the vessels is part of Seaspan Ferries' fleet expansion programme. The vessels will join the Seaspan Swift and Seaspan Reliant, the company’s first hybrid ferries, commissioned just over two years ago.

'Within their first two years of service, our existing LNG hybrid vessels have operated with emission reductions of over fifty per cent compared to traditional vessels; a large part of which is directly linked to the use of LNG fuel. Expanding our fleet of LNG vessels will allow us to further expand our service offering and reduce emissions at the same time. It’s the right decision for the business and for the environment,' said Frank Butzelaar, CEO Seaspan Marine Transportation.

The vessels will be classed by Bureau Veritas and will go into operation in 2021. Damen will start construction in 2019.
